My House Guests - Pt 2

I mentioned a couple weeks ago about the wrens taking up home on my front porch. It turns out the biggest baby was actually a cowbird. It turned into Baby Birdzilla and left the nest - ’cause it didn’t fit in there anymore. The two wren babies were doing fine for a couple days, then one afternoon I checked and the nest was completely empty. The single unhatched egg was even gone. I’m not sure what got the babies - a cat or maybe a snake - but I was sad to see them gone. I know they were at least a week from leaving the nest, so that wasn’t an option. Ah, well. Nature does what it does, I suppose. I hung a bird house high up on the porch in hopes of getting a new set of house guests. Wish me luck.

We’ve had many a house guest set up residence on our porch. Mainly robins. Its so much fun to watch them grow up, but sadly, we have lost a few to cats as well. My heart goes out to our feathered friends. Stay hopeful and watch for new neighbors!

I had a pair set up residence under the roof on my front porch this year also. They hatched their first brood earlier during the spring and actually came back to hatch another brood. The first brood took wing while I was away for a weekend, I came back to an abandoned nest. The second brood took wing during a couple of work days… three in the nest one day, one left on day two, then it was gone on day three. I didn’t expect them to take to wing so quickly, but I’m sure that’s what they did. I’m fairly positive that they flew away as opposed to becoming some predators’ dinner, well, at least while they were under the porch roof that is.
Hopefully your guests took to wing also, and were just hiding out in nearby shrubs until they got comfortable and competent with flying.

Uh, that’s hard to hear. We have in the surrounding Trees, Bushes and Hedges Nests as well, and at least once a Week we hear the Does making some Noise. Obviously Cats, as the Snakes are extend around here.
Just make sure the Birds are save, doing the “Tweetie” (mounting the Birdhouse on a Pole and securing it with barbwire) or something - once those Predators know that they can find Food there, they will check it regulary.
